Terms of Service

Last updated: May 2026

Capiu is a free, ad-free, non-commercial memory-training project. These terms cover the public site at capiu.org and the signed-in app at app.capiu.org. By using either, you agree to what's below. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.

The service

Capiu provides memory-training tools — a Major System lookup, a memory-palace builder, a focus timer, and related features — for personal, educational, and recreational use. It's a hobby project, provided as-is and free of charge, with no service-level guarantee. Features may change, break, or be discontinued at any time.

Your account

Signed-in features at app.capiu.org require an account. Sign-in is by one-time email code or by Google / GitHub OAuth — we never store passwords. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account; younger users need a parent or guardian to consent on their behalf. You're responsible for keeping access to your email or OAuth provider — if you lose both, you lose the account. You can permanently delete the account anytime from Settings → Delete account.

Your content

Most of what you create in Capiu — your palaces, pegs, images, and personal associations — stays in your browser and never reaches our servers. You own that content; we don't see it.

For the small amount of content you do send us (your saved Major System picks, the entity suggestions you submit, your public profile handle), you grant Capiu a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to store, display, and process that content for the purpose of operating the service and improving the shared catalog. Suggestions you submit to the public catalog may be reviewed, edited, merged, or rejected, and accepted ones become part of the community catalog available to all users. You can delete your account at any time, which removes your personal records; community catalog contributions you've authored remain available, but no longer attributed to a live account.

Don't enter live secrets

Capiu is a memory-training aid, not a password manager or a vault. The numbers you save are stored on our servers in a form that we (and anyone with administrative database access) can technically read — see our privacy policy for details.

Do not enter active secrets — bank-card PINs, account passwords, 2FA backup codes, safe combinations, or anything else that currently guards money, accounts, or physical access. Use Capiu for phone numbers, dates, historical facts, jersey numbers, train timetables, and other numbers whose disclosure would not harm you.

If you choose to ignore this restriction, you do so at your own risk and waive any claim against Capiu for loss, theft, or misuse of the secret arising from its presence in our database.

Acceptable use

Don't:

Content moderation

Suggestions you submit to the public catalog go through human review before they're accepted. We may reject, edit, or remove any content that violates these terms or that we consider unsuitable for the catalog (low-quality, off-topic, abusive). We don't use automated content-moderation or algorithmic decision-making beyond basic spam protection.

If you believe content on Capiu is illegal or violates these terms, send a notice to [email protected] including (a) where the content is (URL or in-app reference), (b) why you consider it illegal or in breach of these terms, (c) your name and contact email, and (d) a statement that the information you provide is, to the best of your knowledge, accurate and complete. We'll confirm receipt promptly and send you a reasoned decision without undue delay — typically within 30 days, depending on complexity.

Suspension and termination

We may suspend or close your account if you violate these terms. You can close your account at any time without giving a reason.

Disclaimer and liability

Capiu is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. We don't guarantee that the service will be available, error-free, or that your data will never be lost.

We accept unlimited liability for intent (Vorsatz) and gross negligence (grobe Fahrlässigkeit), as well as for damages from injury to life, body, or health, and for claims under the German Product Liability Act (Produkthaftungsgesetz). For slight negligence (leichte Fahrlässigkeit), we are liable only for the breach of essential contractual duties (wesentliche Vertragspflichten) — that is, duties whose fulfilment makes the proper performance of the contract possible in the first place and on whose observance you may regularly rely — and only up to the contract-typical, foreseeable damage. Any further liability is excluded.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service evolves. The date at the top is always the most recent change. Material changes will be highlighted in-app, and where required by law we will ask for your active re-consent before continued use of signed-in features. If you decline, you can keep using the public site at capiu.org and can export or delete your account anytime from Settings → Delete account.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules. Mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence remains unaffected.
